Importance of Visual Cues in Hearing Restoration by Auditory Prosthesis

چکیده
Auditory prostheses, such as cochlear implant and auditory brainstem implant, are used clinically to restore the hearing of patients with sensorineural hearing loss. These devices can considerably improve the auditory information conveyed to the auditory cortex, but proper rehabilitation process is usually necessary to restore auditory communication to an adequate level. Therefore, improvements in the auditory information provided by the prosthesis can be complemented by better rehabilitation process. Moreover, the complementary role of visual cues is also important. The “lipreading” phenomenon is well known in patients with degraded speech perception; i.e., reduced speech perception in the presence of poor auditory conditions, such as background noise and in patients with hearing loss, is improved by the combined presentation of visual speech. In addition to such conventional lip-reading, audiovisual speech has another beneficial role in the auditory rehabilitation process; i.e., the visual cue enhances the auditory adaptation process to the degraded speech sound. In the present paper, these two aspects of audio-visual speech in auditory rehabilitation are reviewed.

Background: The main result of hearing impairment is reduction of speech perception. Patient with auditory neuropathy can hear but they can not understand. Their difficulties have been traced to timing related deficits, revealing the importance of the neural encoding of timing cues for understanding speech. Objective: In the present study psychoacoustic perception (minimal noticeable differen...
متن کاملVisual and Auditory Complications during Deferasirox Therapy in Beta-thalassemia
Background: Deferasirox is an oral iron chelator widely used to treat iron overload in patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia. This study investigated the prevalence of visual and auditory complications caused by deferasirox. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 156 patients aged less than 18 years with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia and deferasirox iron...
متن کاملThe plastic ear and perceptual relearning in auditory spatial perception
The auditory system of adult listeners has been shown to accommodate to altered spectral cues to sound location which presumably provides the basis for recalibration to changes in the shape of the ear over a life time. Here we review the role of auditory and non-auditory inputs to the perception of sound location and consider a range of recent experiments looking at the role of non-auditory inp...

Introduction: Hearing loss is one of the most common problems in elderly people. Functional side effects of hearing loss are various. Due to the fact that hearing loss is the common impairment in elderly people; the importance of its possible effects on auditory memory is undeniable. This study aims to focus on the hearing loss effects on auditory memory. Materials and Methods: Dichotic Audi...
متن کاملThe use of auditory and visual context in speech perception by listeners with normal hearing and listeners with cochlear implants
There is a wide range of acoustic and visual variability across different talkers and different speaking contexts. Listeners with normal hearing (NH) accommodate that variability in ways that facilitate efficient perception, but it is not known whether listeners with cochlear implants (CIs) can do the same. In this study, listeners with NH and listeners with CIs were tested for accommodation to...
